Clara, Texas is now considered a ghost town with no active businesses, but it holds historical significance as a once-thriving German farming settlement.
Founded in 1886 by German immigrant Herman Specht, Clara was envisioned as a hub for German settlers in Wichita County.
Specht named the town after his wife, Clara Vogel Lange, and invested heavily in land and infrastructure, including a nursery and laid-out streets.
At its peak, Clara had a post office, school, and community life centered around agriculture.
However, a severe drought in 1891 devastated crops, and the Galveston hurricane of 1900 wiped out the couple’s other investments.
The post office closed in 1901, briefly reopened, and then shut down permanently.
Today, Clara is marked by historical remnants like the Clara Cemetery, but it no longer hosts any businesses
